National Safe Digging Day, 8/11 (Aug. 11), reminds everyone to contact 811 before you dig

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. — This Aug. 11, NIPSCO urges homeowners and contractors to contact 811 at least two full business days before beginning any digging project. This free and simple service helps prevent damage to underground utility lines and promotes community safety.

“Contacting 811 is the law, and the process is quick and convenient for all Hoosiers,” said NIPSCO President and Chief Operating Officer Vince Parisi. “Accidentally striking a utility line can result in significant repair expenses, inconvenient outages, penalties, serious injuries and even loss of life.”

By calling 811 or visiting Indiana811.org, residents and contractors are connected to the state system which coordinates with local utilities to mark underground lines using color-coded flags or spray paint. These markings help identify the location and type of utility lines, such as gas, electricity, water or communications, so that digging can be done safely.

Examples of projects needing a locate request include installing fences or mailboxes, planting trees or shrubs, and constructing patios or decks. Even shallow garden digging can be dangerous because utility line depths may differ due to erosion, prior work or uneven ground.

While homeowners or professionals may think they know where underground utilities are, the only dependable way to confirm is by contacting 811.

“Over 80 percent of damage to our natural gas lines last year was caused by failing to contact 811 or follow safe digging practices,” added Parisi. “NIPSCO proudly supports 811 Day and reminds all our customers and communites to call before you dig every day of the year.”
